(Don Coscarelli) Table For Six
Horror fans know Don Coscarelli as the guy who created the Phantasm series; horror-comedy fans know him as the guy who made Bubba Ho-Tep; and fantasy lovers might know that he directed and co-wrote the original Beastmaster.
With his latest, John Dies at the End, an adaptation of the novel by David Wong, he combines surreal horror elements with absurdist comedy and sci-fi happenings.
The insane story has buddies John and Dave tangling with a variety of inter-dimensional weirdies, including zombies, insectoid critters, a Lovecraftian deity, time travellers, a homicidal cop, swarms of something-or-other, and, um, a monster made out of pieces of meat from a freezer.
It’s all brought on by a mysterious black liquid drug called soy sauce that expands the mind into other (dangerous) planes of existence. Paul Giamatti co-stars as a sceptical reporter, in one of the weirdest, most fun genre experiences of the past decade, never mind this year.
This one’s for the truly open-minded who want to have their minds blown open further. It's now out on DVD and Blu-ray, again from Anchor Bay.
